Miracle Theatre Group

Explorations of Portland theaters led the wife and I out on the S.E. area of town for an evening of drama on the small stage of the Miracle Theater. We enjoyed HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS LOST THERE ACCENTS. I enjoyed the plays symbolism that was taken to a tasteful point and then left for the viewer to take it further, The small cast was uplifting, and put on a brilliant sold out
performance.

My new friends

I have a couple of friends that have been by my side recently, so I thought it would be kind to introduce them .
This first jewel has grown on me quickly. I'm told its a 1965, the serial numbers place it correctly although the actual year that it was manufactured has faded unreadable. It is a surviving US made Harmony Monterey arch-top #950. Picked it up on craigslist, it didn't take much to set it up. installed new strings and a new rosewood pick-guard (the original was missing, they were made of one-ply plastic that sported a art deco style M for the monterey line.) This guitar has a very subtle tone that I have come to really enjoy. I am in the process of building a couple transducer pickups to install under the bridge had them taped to the body last night and every thing sounded sweet as Chicago.


My second association comes from Brazil, a very worn student classical that was manufactured by a company called Giannini. I did some online research and found some pdf. catalogs from the 60's and 70's , with what info I gathered I would place this from the 80's. The varnish is cracking all over giving it a patina that shows years of neglect. I found this in the toy section at the Goodwill, it was missing 3 strings and one of the strings was off a steel string. There amongst slobbering children I picked it up and strummed this out of tune forgotten instrument. I was blown away by its sound. I paid $17.00 and brought it home where I put it in the closet for well over a year. This winter I pulled it out and replaced the tuners, did what I could to clean up the varnished surface, gave her some new strings, and have come to enjoy its sound. I leave this one in the stairwell in our house and I enjoy sitting on the steps playing with the nice natural stairwell re-verb.

Crystal Ballroom

Last Friday I was Lucky enough to check out one of my favorite bands at the Crystal Ballroom. This was my first time to visit the Crystal, I was fascinated by the history that seemed to drip from the aged walls. The show was well worth the 45 minute wait outside in the close to freezing temperature. The venue suffered from being geared at making as much money as possible from the patrons. The drinks were small portioned and expensive. Ten bucks for a warm Red Bull and a shot of well whiskey. Luckily the Wife and I chowed some Chinese food before we arrived. The show sold out but remained uncrowded during the first 2 bands The first act: Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears put on a sweet show- very entertaining mix of Fender guitars and a tasteful horn section crossed with some soul and blues that kept the growing crowd alive. The second Act only performed two songs featuring Anya Marina singing with a charmed voice accompanied with her gold Stratocaster. She had a tough spot to fill after the energized first act, but she held steady as she sang. One of the songs "Satellite Heart" is on the New Moon soundtrack. As the roadies set up the stage for the final act Spoon, the crystal filled up and got pretty cramped. Ive been looking forward to seeing Spoon for years now so when they finally hit the stage sometime after 9:30 I went into a very peaceful rock and roll state of mind. They put on a show that was much better than I imagined they would put on. They sounded incredible, and performed there tunes perfect even with numerous broken strings. For some unknown reason the band filmed this show, so video cameras were here and there catching the band and the sardined audience. I walked away from the show very pleased. I will be very eager to see them again. hopefully at another venue, as the Crystal is a great place just a little to cool for my liking.

Wonder Ballroom

Had a great time catching the Dinosaur jr show last night. It was way loud, and tasty. Violent Soho opened the show and they simply rocked with Aussie style. Lou Barlow and the Missing men took the stage and caught my interest with some crafty songwriting that deserves creditable note. At some point he reassured the Portland crowd that " Help is on the way".
The Dinosaur jr. crew took the stage and delivered a brilliantly loud as hell show. This was the first time Ive visited the Wonder Ballroom, the stage is a little small, most of it was filled with gear, aside from that apears to be a great place for the 21 and over crowd to grab some food and drinks and take in some tunes.

Roseland Theater

Caught Regina Spektor last night at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Or. A Sold out show. First time Ive been to this venue(6th and Burnside). Used to be called the starry night. Regina put on a fine show, it was a gift to hear such a voice live. The love-wife unit and I enjoyed her well crafted songs very much, they gave us a long lasting musical buzz, it was a gift to hear such a voice live. The opening band was called Jupiter one, which seems to be Regina's violin players alter ego rock outfit where he sings and plays rhythm guitar,keyboard,and also violin. Jupiter One gives alot of enthusiasm live. Next Saturday I'm going to kick it up a notch with the Dinosaur Jr. show at the wonder ballroom, with Lou Barlow, The Missingmen and Violent Soho.

Spent some time this past summer doing some traveling, 6 states in 7 days.
When I got home I spent a whole bunch of time editing a video of the voyage.
When I was finished with the end product I was totally unsatisfied with it, and at some point I lost the final file containing the video. What a bummer. The other day I found the music I put together for it, so it also does not slip away into a lost file I decided to post it here along with some photos from the voyage.. The track is over 19 minutes long.
